Import Export is excited to present “please be tender with my data” – the multidisciplinary exhibition by Warsaw-based duo Eternal Engine.

Eternal Engine is a queer artist duo, formed by Jagoda Wójtowicz (she/her) and Martix Navrot (they/he) in 2019, that works across the media of VR, AR, moving image, performative lectures, sculpture, and installation. In their work, Eternal Engine investigates the performativity of virtual spaces and intermedium anomalies (3D, AI, VR, XR). Inspired by digital folklore, technological fetishes, and nanobot fantasies, Eternal Engine has developed a singular language that blurs the boundary between the Real and the Virtual.

"please be tender with my data" is an immersive exhibition that champions exploration of new forms of sexuality and intimate relationships with data. Central to the exhibition is “Body Open Source” – a radical gaming experience that probes queer intimacy and challenges the convention of binary gender classification offered by mainstream gaming. First created in 2018 – in the advent of VR chats and the metaverse – “Body Open Source” is a fluid universe that fosters the forming of tender relationships by nonbinary players. Players interact in a limitless, often amalgamating way, and – depending on their number – they can also form constellations. 

Reinvigorated by the artists in 2022, “Body Open Source” provides a radical counterpoint to both the commercial gaming and porn industries – which have benefited from the emergence of VR chats and recent technological advances in relaying haptic qualities in virtual space. By allowing freedom in avatar-creation and shifting the focus from sex as transaction (penetration) to sex as fluid data exchange (circlusion), Eternal Engine provides a blueprint for a safe and tender way of experiencing intimacy online.

The VR is presented alongside new work commissioned for the exhibition: 3D objects, moving images, and spatial installations that serve as a portal into the network of micro-metaverses created by the artists – further extending the Virtual into the physical realm.

Prior to their debut under the name Eternal Engine, the artists spent several years working in the field of video and VR-experience art direction. In 2022, they were nominated to European Change Makers, the annual list published by We Are Europe – Creative Europe project. Coinciding with the exhibition at the gallery will be other projects by Eternal Engine taking place internationally: "Tellurian Insider,” an AV performance at Queer Festival Vienna 2022; "Enter The Chamber," a solo show at Skala gallery in Poznań; and the group show “The Discomfort of Evening” at Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.

Eternal Engine to queerowy duet artystyczny utworzony w 2019 roku przez Jagodę Wójtowicz (ona/jej) i Martixa Navrota (oni/on) pracujących w mediach takich jak VR, AR, wykłady performatywne, obiekty i instalacje. W swojej pracy Eternal Engine bada performatywność przestrzeni wirtualnych i anomalii międzymedialnych (3D, AI, VR, XR). Zainspirowany cyfrowym folklorem, technologicznymi fetyszami i fantazjami o nanobotach, język wizualny Eternal Engine zaciera granicę między rzeczywistością a światem wirtualnym.

„please be tender with my data” to multidyscyplinarna wystawa, która odkrywa nowe formy ludzkiej seksualności oraz intymne relacje z danymi. Jej centralnym punktem jest Body Open Source — praca VR odrzucająca ograniczenia binarnej klasyfikacji płci dyktowane przez gry głównego nurtu. Stworzony po raz pierwszy w 2018 r. – wraz z pojawieniem się VR czatów – Body Open Source to płynny świat, który sprzyja tworzeniu delikatnych relacji przez niebinarnych graczy wchodzących ze sobą w niczym nieograniczone relacje. Ożywione przez artystów w 2022 roku, Body Open Source stanowi radykalną przeciwwagę dla przemysłu porno, który w ogromnym stopniu wykorzystuje technologię VR. Przenosząc punkt ciężkości z seksu jako transakcji (penetracji) na płynną wymianę danych (circlusion – oplatanie), Eternal Engine stawia pytanie o queerową przyjemność w metaversie. Akceptując ograniczenia binarnych komputerów spekuluje o formach niebinarnego, kwantowego seksu, przyglądając się naszym intymnym relacjom z danymi.

Poza Body Open Source na wystawie prezentowane są również nowe prace duetu: obiekty 3D, animacja tworzona w czasie rzeczywistym oraz instalacje przestrzenne, które są portalem z tego, co wirtualne, do tego co fizyczne. Przed debiutem pod nazwą Eternal Engine, Jagoda Wójtowicz i Matrix Navrot przez kilka lat byli związani z teatrem tworząc wideo oraz VR. W 2022 roku duet został nominowany do European Change Makers, listy publikowanej corocznie przez We Are Europe – Creative Europe. Z wystawą w galerii Import Export zbiegają się inne projekty Eternal Engine na arenie międzynarodowej: „Tellurian Insider AV performance na Queer Festival Vienna 2022” oraz „Enter The Chamber” – wystawa indywidualna duetu w Galerii Skala w Poznaniu.
