MIA DUDEK: "Saturation"

Saturation focuses on moments in which bodies exceed their boundaries, seep into seemingly solid frameworks, and spill beyond the structures that determine what contains what — and what shapes what. Dudek’s photographs attempt to capture traces of such transgressions and the tensions that arise when a body, shaped by space, begins to move beyond and through it. In the artist’s work, the motif of corporeality escaping its own limits recurs in various images, reaching back to her student years, when she was inspired by the bodies of pregnant prisoners confined to cells. In Dudek’s artistic practice, motifs of permeation, impregnation, and emergence also become her very method of working. Ideas unconstrained by rigid boundaries overflow into different areas, while concepts reveal themselves by filtering and seeping between series. (...)
"(...) In the bathroom, a pregnant artist, a body within a body immersed in the bathtub; moisture drips, runs, and seeps. Here, Dudek comes forward with an aesthetics of leaking, evoking a state in which bodies, transcending their boundaries, disintegrate and proliferate simultaneously. The bathtub epitomizes water and amniotic fluid, soaking in and spilling. Here, the artist does not seek to highlight a hydrofeminist solidarity of aqueous bodies but sees the spilling of water and bodies as a process in which cracks mark a rotting battleground of fighting for one’s own place and identity. Being pregnant means being a body within a body; life means crossing its boundary (...)"

Mia Dudek's work is also on view as part of the group exhibition featuring winners of the 14th edition of the annual photography award by CCA Znaki Czasu. As a recipient of the Director's Main Award, Mia Dudek will be proposed a solo exhibition at the institution.
The exhibition is on view until 14 June.

The prize – inspired by the legacy of pioneering Australian modernist Sir Sidney Nolan – invites artists to explore art engaging with emotion and human identity in relation to society and the natural world. The Sidney Nolan Trust seeks work exhibiting bravery and conviction, exploring the unique quality of chosen medium.
The selection of winning works will culminate in an exhibition staged this summer at The Rodd - Sidney Nolan’s former 17th-century home in rural Herefordshire. Mia Dudek will present two paintings from the "Waiting Room" series, first inaugurated last year during her solo exhibition at IMPORT EXPORT, Warsaw.

Dudek was also shortlisted for the Hopper Art Prize. The international award recognises artists whose work is characterised by formal and conceptual rigor and whose diverse practices address issues both public and private, local and global. Mia Dudek's work is also on the shortlist for the Form Photo Award, supported by photo basel, Picter, and Form Magazine. The Award is dedicated to discovering emerging voices in photography and it aims to foster global dialogue, intellectual exchange, and cross-cultural solidarity within the art community.
