On 5 and 6 September, IMPORT EXPORT hosted Kasia Kuzka’s new performance, in homage to the life and work of Cathy Josefowitz, the late artist and choreographer whose exhibition MOVING SKIES is on view at the gallery in Warsaw.
MOVING SKIES is a solo exhibition of work by Cathy Josefowitz (1956–2014), organised in collaboration with the artist's estate. The exhibition focuses on the 2010-2014 series Ciels (Skies) – the culmination of Josefowitz’s lifelong exploration of dreams, spirituality, movement, and performance.
In the 1990s, inspired by the nature and landscapes of Ojai, California, Josefowitz surrendered pure figuration to make room for abstraction and to embrace her longstanding interest in mysticism and spirituality. Created between 2010 and her untimely death from cancer in 2014, the nearly monochromatic, gestural and hypnotic Ciels (Skies) act as a painterly register of memories of places and emotional landscapes – conjured by meditations the artist undertook after encountering the teachings of Osho, the founder of Dynamic Meditation.
Kasia Kuzka is a dancer and choreographer working across the fields of dance, performance, theatre, film, and visual arts. She is a graduate of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London. In her practice, she explores how the precision and discipline gained through dance training can coexist with risk, distortion, and intuitive movement. She is interested in the tensions that arise when the body ceases to perform and begins to reveal what is uncontrolled and hidden beneath the surface of learned behaviours.
